Brescia finally avoid being an elevator and can stay in Serie A for the first time in 34 years, since 1967, the year of Roby's birth. As reported in Italian Soccer website, coach Mazzone acknowledged Roby and said "his great merit was that he was able to adapt his top class to a club which fights at the bottom of the standing. Surely I would like to have him in my teams also in the previous seasons, I would have won some more games for sure."

Below are three RAI pictures and one La Gazzetta dello Sport picture.

As reported in Giornale di Brescia, after the match against Perugia, Roby said "I hoped that it could end with two to zero, but it was not. However, I must admit that it was a beautiful draw, a difficult game, hard to play."

Then Roby was asked whether he was trying to score directly from two of the corner kicks, and he replied "I tried once, then the second one I was trying to kick it to the near post and create difficulty to the keeper, in the first half one of the corner kicks went across the face of the goal and Petruzzi couldn't catch the ball."

Finally about his quiet performance in the games lately, Roby said "it is that, you know, you are used to the good performance of me, with goals in all the games."

As reported in Giornale di Brescia, after the match against Bologna, Roby said "surely I would like to continue scoring, but as I have already said, the only thing that counts is the salvation of Brescia. The summery temperature gave both squads a difficult condition in the game. From this point of view surely it was not an easy contest. On the field were two good teams. They have a different objective that they tried their best in order to win. It ended as a draw, but I think that the contest was emotional for me."

Today is the day of general elections in Italy, and as it's shown in the last two pictures in the first row below, yesterday at the Rigamonti Stadium, a man put up a banner that read "tomorrow I vote for Baggio".

As reported in Giornale di Brescia, Italian national team coach Trapattoni said "before I can say if I will put Roberto Baggio into the list of the Azzurri for the coming World Cup, we must conquer the qualification mathematically. Then I will have to take into consideration the performance and shape of Vieri and Del Piero, Inzaghi and Montella, Di Vaio and Chiesa. In this position the competition is indeed strong." It seems that Trapattoni does not consider Roby as a playmaker, rather he will put him up front as a striker if he calls him.

Then the coach added "if he is still in this shape in May 2002, there will be a possibility for him to take part in the World Cup in Japan and Korea."

When asked whether he would take Roby for the match against Georgia, Trapattoni shaked his head and said he would take the group of players he had been using recently.

As reported in Tuttosport, Serie B team Torino has made a bid of $3.5 million to purchase Baggio. Roby will earn $2 million and can leave at the end of the season. Torino looks certain to be promoted to Serie A next season, but Brescia president Corioni is reportedly ready to increase Roby's salary in order to keep him with the team.

As reported in Calciomercato, Brescia president Corioni had confirmed the stay of coach Mazzone as well as Baggio, which is a good news for the team if they successfully remain in Serie A next season. On the other hand, recently there are rumours that Blackburn Rovers is interested in getting Roby, as the newly promoted English Premier League club is reportedly seeking an experienced leader. But obviously Roby will not leave Italy, because it is clear to everyone that he wants to be close to his family, and that he wants to stay in Serie A to catch the dream of representing the Italian national team in World Cup 2002.

Ten goals so far this season, and 170 goals in Serie A. As reported in Datasport, after the match against Lecce, Roby said "the success of the squad is more important than my three goals. We needed these three points, we have come here in order to win and we have been fighting since the first minute, so we deserve this result. I am in good condition. But I am in form because I have more playing time for the squad, and I have lost the problem of missing goals. Now I am better and I won't let it go." And about coach Mazzone, Roby said "what I must say is that he is the optimal trainer, and a great person." Then about the national team, he said "still a long time before the World Cup. Now I only concentrate on the salvation of Brescia that hasn't been achieved yet."
