Good news for Roby that his injury is a first degree distortion, and will only need to rest for at most three matches, that means he will surely be able to play in the match against Udinese on 25 November. While reported in La Gazzetta dello Sport, surprisingly Baggio is already running, and Brescia team doctor Alicicco said that if he doesn't feel any pain he may even be available to play against Venezia this weekend.

9TH OCTOBER 2001

As reported in Datasport, Cesare Maldini, Italian national team coach during World Cup '98, said that Baggio did not create any problem to the Azzurri. He said "if time goes back four years, I would still bring Roberto Baggio to the World Cup in France. He did not create any problem to anybody, and it is not true that the duplication of him and Del Piero caused our exit from the tournament. I first called up Baggio in 1997, in Naples. From my memory I saw the enthusiasm of the supporters immediately."

7TH OCTOBER 2001

Last night Italy beat Hungary 1-0 and received the tickets to the Korea and Japan World Cup in year 2002. As reported in Giornale di Brescia, fans at Parma's stadium were continuously chanting "Baggio, Baggio, Baggio", until Del Piero scored the only goal of the match from a freekick.

Also reported in Giornale di Brescia, Roby's Brescia teammates all support the idea of Baggio playing in the World Cup. Firstly, Spanish player Guardiola said "it is good to share this objective with him, this will help us getting together in every moment. It is a mistake only to consider Baggio as one of the greatest soccer players in Italy, because he is one of the greatest in the world. It's a pleasure to be able to play with him. Moreover he is exceptional and so Italy need him. However it's up to Trapattoni to decide."

Pirlo said "he (Roby) has always been my idol. Until three years ago I would ask him for the jersey when I met him, then I had the fortune to be with him in Inter and then in Brescia. He is a great player, and in Japan he is one of the players that has a large number of supporters. Frankly I cannot find a reason not to choose him." Then about Totti's comments, Pirlo said "that was not envy, it was only that Italy already has a great dressing room atmosphere. But I can assure that Roberto does not crack any dressing room atmosphere. Also about playing the same role as me, he has been expressing many times that I would be his heir, but we have demonstrated that we can play together."

Brescia young defender Bonera, who also has the chance to be called up to the World Cup squad, said "he (Roby) is demonstrating that he is physically well. With respect to the reason of his reputation, he cannot be neglected." And about Cannavaro's comments, he said "it's strange because Fabio is a nice person, as an example he was kind to me during my national debut. Also he knows that Roberto is able to make a difference."

Calori, who was nearly called by Cesare Maldini, said "it was the year when Udinese came third and it seemed that Maldini would call me sooner or later. But he didn't, I still do not understand why. I would be happy if Roberto can make it. As a team we will play the best for him. He is loved by all the fans in the world, that they deserve to see him once again in the big stage. Physically he is still good and I do not see any reason for not giving him another chance."

6TH OCTOBER 2001

As reported in Giornale di Brescia, yesterday Baggio had a press conference. Firstly about his retirement at the end of this season, Roby said "this is the idea, at least today. This may change, it depends on what will happen in the next few months. It is a decision after a long time of consideration."

After Sunday's hat-trick, Roby is now in the seventh place of the all-time Serie A scorers, he said "I would like to dedicate this to Zucchero, he wrote a song that dedicates to me and my family in his latest disc."

About Mazzone ran towards Atalanta fans when Baggio equalized the score in the final minutes, and then got sent off, after being insulted by the fans throughout the match, Roby said "there have been enough speaking about this. Now it's over."

Then on the violence and insults of supporters, Roby said "there are laws that fight against violence and for me they seem to be working. Now something will have to be done in order to limit insults."

Return to coach Mazzone, Roby said "he made a mistake, but it was because of the attitude of some supporters. I had faced this when I went back to Florence with the jersey of Juve. Everyone has his character. The coach reacted in that way, I will not because I can reply on the field. Mazzone obviously could not reply them on the field. Honestly I only saw Mazzone returning to the bench. Then I was told of what happened in the dressing room and I watched it on television. That made me laugh, made me laugh to death."

Then Roby was asked what would happen if he could play with Mazzone ten years earlier, he replied "surely I would be much better, because I am working very well with him, and this is not only my feeling, but also all my teammates. The relationship between us is great, from training to preparation of the games. When we were going through some difficult moments last season, he told us to go into the field with calm and be prepared. He is a person I admire very much."

About Guardiola, Roby said "he is a great player and for me the best person I've ever seen. He is calm and working hard because he was training alone for several months. I am sure he will get from Brescia what I have been getting." About Hubner, Roby said "Hubner has always been scoring many goals. Last year I scored only a few, because I did not play that often." About Chiesa, Roby said "I give my best regards to him. Unfortunately that is an example of the change of life of a soccer player who has had a great objective and expectation in an important season."

Then it's about Brescia that up to this point Baggio and Tare are the only scorers of the team in Serie A, Roby said "because we are the players that are closest to the goal. Surely we also need the midfielders and defenders to score goals. We know that our objective is salvation. Last year we only had three points after seven matches, but now we have six after five matches, and this makes me calmer. I know that the team can do good, but I also know that if we lose the mentality of the past championship we could pay a high price. We must concentrate on the salvation alone."

Then he was once again asked if he would leave if Mazzone didn't return before the start of the season, Roby said "if Mazzone had gone, yes. The truth is that I hoped and knew that he would return, but if he did not then I would have gone too."

Finally Roby was asked if he felt that the Brescia now is stronger than the one last year, he answered "on the paper it is, but we must demonstrate."

As reported in Sportal, Bologna captain Signori believed that Trapattoni should take Baggio to the World Cup, he said "if I were the coach I would bring Baggio to the World Cup. In the current national team, there are experienced players, but also many young players. This team is still not ready to take the World Cup title."

As reported by Agence France-Presse, both Totti and Cannavaro thought that it might be problematic if Baggio is back to the national team. But on the other hand there were good words from veteran Maldini and Albertini, also from defender Iuliano and goalkeeper Toldo.

3RD OCTOBER 2001

Brescia's third goal against Atalanta has been officially given to Baggio, so Roby now has 5 goals and is one of the leading scorers in Serie A. Up to this point Roby has 175 goals in Serie A in total, not only is the top Serie A scorer among players still playing, but he is also up to the 7th place of the all-time Serie A top scorers. Here are the MPEG and AVI formats videos of Roby's third goal in the match on Sunday, sources are RAI Sport and TELE+, respectively.

As reported by Agence France-Presse, during an interview with RAI, Italian national team coach Trapattoni stated that Roby has a good chance to be in the World Cup squad to be playing in Korea and Japan next year, he said "we have been monitoring Baggio since the start of the year and we will continue to do so, then we will decide. That he is playing well is not in doubt. He deserves our compliments. As for the World Cup we will decide when the time comes but not in advance. I can only say that Baggio is in the group of 30-35 players in my mind. We will see."
